Trout, DMZ and North Korea

When viewing a discussion of the thawing of tensions in the Korean peninsula I was drawn to search for info on Fishing in North Korea. I remember a BBC report on a bicycle tour of the north. Are fly fishing tours far off? I found a cool article MidCurrent by a guide in korea and a nice website about cherry trout. The address is the extremely un ironic http://cherrytrout.com/ . The site turned out to be much more than just a site on cherry trout. It was more like a fly fishing guide to fishing in Korea. I imagine them to to be 1/4 size Frying Pan footballs. They seem to be similar so Rainbows so I looked them up. They are in fact in the Oncorhynchus genus. There doesn't seem to be too much info out there. I fond some links to some articles about how Kim Jong Il liked to fly fish and some brief postings on message boards in English and in french. My fav mb posting was a nice guy posting two pix he took while fishing in Korea. Some Internet hero commented that it looked like Pennsylvania. Thanks genius. Check out the links and let me know what you think. Does anyone have more info on fishing in Korea?

His description of land mines getting washed down strewam durring high rain times beings the concept of a difficult wade to a new level. I have also linked James Card's website. I guess this goes to show that ytou can find fly fisherman anywhere.

What can fly fishing learn from the Lin-sanity?

Ever since Jeremy Lin appeared on Sports Center and the twiterverse I have been curious about how the would be portrayed in the media. His position as a point guard on an NBA team is something that runs counter to Asian male stereotypes. Countless public figures have stumbled recently trying to comment on this phenomena. I believe Jeff Yang’s article, which I have posted a link to below gets it dead right. I still would like to see more discussion on Asian male stereotypes. It never ceases to amaze me how in this day and age folks find it ok to make racists comments. I am not an expert in these areas so I'll keep an eye out for some meaningful discussions.

The concept of sport and masculinity is one that interests me. I find myself constantly involved in sport between my two main pursuits, fly fishing and lacrosse. Many times I find myself uncomfortable with the language or behavior of those around. I’m thinking about how folks talk about April Vokey and all the scandals that have plagued lacrosse over the past few years. As a coach I have used them as teaching moments with my players. Anyone curious about more on April can check out one of my previous posts.

I wonder how ethnicity and masculinity play out in our sport? It seems that we embrace anyone who has the goods. I'm thinking about Skagit Master 1 where Scott Howell recounts mistaking Ed Ward who is Japanese for being Native American. "What tribe are you?" I know i didnt think twice about what Ed's ethicity was. I just wanted figure out how he moved all that line. We hang on Goren Andersson’s words..."I have a drift inside and says go to the river." I am not even sure what sort of scandinavian he is. However, when it comes to women in our sport one doesn’t need to look far. How do we juxtapose Joan Wulff and April Vokey. Is it odd in our over-sexualized time that we have April and the uber-malecentric '50s has Joan. I know Joan is still with us. I would love to listen to that Itinerant Angler Podcast. How cool would it be to listen to Zach interview April and Joan together?

I am really curious about what other people think about the media’s portrayal of Lin. If he wasn’t Asian would anyone care that the new young point guard was doing well? What does it say that people are amazed that someone could do so well from a place that is perceived to be academically difficult. As Yang points out in his article often people comments about the ethnicity of soemone else have more to do with their own perceptions than the realities of the person they are commenting on. I’m curious how these themes of ethnicity and masculinity play out in other areas like fly fishing.

The best part of the article is at the end. It is about balance in life. It probably speaks more to me as new father but hopefully other find it empowering as well.

These pix are from a trip to FL a few years ago. These are certainly not the biggest snook out there but they were a bunch of fun to catch. I think I caught 4 on 4 casts. I caught these snook in bayou by freshwater spring outlet. I used a Scott S4S 9ft 9wt and a tan bucktail clouser with two brown/furnace grizz hackles.
