click on the image from sage to view a great reviews of all of the upcoming Sage One Switch and Spey rods. i ahve also included soem vids from youtube. I can't wait to get my hands on "ONE" of these rods. I think I am going to go with the 4 wt switch. I just picked up Skagit Master 3 from A Marblehead Fly Fisher. They have a few left but most have been bought already. Stoked to watch this. I will put up a review soon.
I was writing an email back to a west coast fly fishing friend when I started reading the head hunters blog that he suggested. I was intrigued by a term they used, swey rod. I read further and came to find out that they were borrowing a term from another blog called Mystic Waters. I know these rods. I have coveted these rods. I have also just thought of them and heard others refer to them as little spey rods or big switch rods. I have even seen the them in action. I know the Sage TCX switch rods fit these categories. I also know that the new one switch rods will fit this category. So these Swey rods are just two handed rods that fall above 11 ft and less than 12 ft. It is a great concept. The rod I fish most is a 12'6" spey rod. I have no doubt that with today's super light weight materials on weight saving construction techniques that these rods are a blast. After my recent experience with a slightly softer salt stick I think that I will love the one switches... I mean Sweys. Sounds likr the 4 switch was the big hit. http://speypages.com/speyclave/showthread.php?t=58085&page=2 Having cast the single hander 9ft 5 wt Sage one rod I can say they are incredible. I can’t wait to cast the Spey and Switch models that are sure to come out soon. Skagit Master 3 presents modern concepts in steelhead fly design. No single steelhead pattern is a silver bullet. Confidence in the fly you choose plays a major role in a fly's success. But thinking beyond what you learned in the "how to" books of the past often results in some cool fly concepts. Skagit Master 3 presents a few modern patterns and the steelheaders who tie them: Hannah Belford, Tom Larimer, Eric Neufeld, Jeff Hickman, Ed Hepp and of course Scott Howell, Ed Ward and Jerry French. For more info about Skagit Master DVDs, go to: http://skagitmaster.com/ I would also like to give a big shot out to my fav Salmon RIver guide Paul Conklin for being the first person to bring this latests Skagit Master's release date to my attention http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/2012/01/podcast_april_vokey_will_survi.html I love my sport but I am a little annoyed at some of the old boy culture. I am particularly disturbed after listening to April Vokey’s second appearance on Zach Mathews, Itinerant Angler Podcast. I love Zach’s articles and always listen to the podcast. So please do not misconstrue any of my comments as critical of what he is up to. I highly recommend that anyone interested in fly fishing listen to this and all of Zach’s podcasts. You can access them through the link I have included below. I have mad respect for April. She makes a living fishing every day. Isn’t that that dream? I know that it is a hard life. It seems that she has had a more difficult go of it based simply on her appearance. She is very upfront on her culpability in cultivating these issues. By her own words she started a company call “Fly Gal” and could have called it “BC Steelhead Adventures”. The thing I was most disturbed by was how she felt about the tabloid nature and misogynistic way in which the fly fishing press and folks discuss her online. She freely admits that she took part in promoting her image. She went out of her way to look nice in the pictures. I certainly have heard the discussion in the shop and even participated at times. It was quite a shift to see her with those incredible fish. Remember when everyone though that it couldn’t be real. How many times did you hear, ”I bet her BF caught that”. I think it is pretty cool that a young attractive woman can be the real deal. She cannot change the way she looks and simply put good for her for using her image to promote her business and conservation. What I am not OK with is the degrading way that some reduce her to a sexual object. This is not only disrespectful to her and women in general but disrespects our art and the fish we all love. Having witnessed powerful women in my life treated the same way it struck very close to home when I heard the pain in her voice. I like Zach and know he is producing a product that we all want to hear, but would he ask Lefty Kreh about his dating history. April seemed ok with that line of questioning. Maybe they discussed it ahead of time. Maybe she wanted to set the record straight. I have learned a few things though. I respect April way more than I did before over one simple action; she left a relationship over stocked and pellet fed fish. When she opened that door and saw the feed it was if she saw another woman hiding or was confronted with a drug problem that she had been lied to about. I also have been reminded that men will lie about anything to laid. All I have to say is, that guy who ever he is a total and complete DB. Listen below. I welcome your comments. You can find other links to what Zack and April are up to in my links section. http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/2012/01/podcast_april_vokey_will_survi.html I have been trying to dial in my 12'6'' 5/6 400 gr Loomis two hander. I started out with a 425 gr skagit flight head and the old running line off of a trashed outbound. I think the running line is a .33 or something like that. I tried out a 7 wt nymph line and that was way to light. Yesterday I put on a buddies 400 gr skagit flight. That 25 grains shouldn't have made that much difference but wow did it ever. I chucked 10' of t8 and 5 of t8 and 5 of fly line. I was able to carry much more line in the air. I wonder what the 375 would be like? I still can't help but think what one of these scandi short set ups would be be like. Seems like lots of people think they should be called skandi shorts since you can execute skandi and skagit cast with one line. The unispey is interesting too. I have never tossed a long belly line. Now I just need to dial in a nymphing set up. |
