NEWS FROM THE DELAWARE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
Contact: Michael Globetti, DNREC Public Affairs, 302-739-9902 Outermost section of Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier to be demolished and removed for safety reasons LEWES (September 4, 2012) – DNREC Secretary Collin O’Mara has ordered the demolition and removal of the outermost tee-head section of the aging Cape Henlopen Fishing Pier as an immediate safety measure after the structure began to collapse and debris from it was seen as posing navigational and environmental hazards. The tee-head section of the pier, which has been closed to the public since 2006, recently was found to be rapidly deteriorating as a result of prolonged storm and wave damage, prompting the emergency measures, Sec. O’Mara said. Demolition and removal will be confined to the tee-head, or outer span, at the end of the 1,800-foot-long pier on the Delaware Bay. Contractors are expected to be onsite with equipment later this week. The all-wooden pier was built during World War II by the US Army as a mining wharf. Several rehabilitative efforts have been undertaken since 2007 to the pilings beneath the section that remains open for public use. There will be no additional closure of the fishing pier during demolition activity. An adjacent bait-and-tackle shop, parking lot for pier-goers and public restrooms will remain open during the demolition project. Meanwhile, fishermen, boaters, kayakers are cautioned to stay clear of the deteriorated sections per a Notice-to-Mariners posted by the US Coast Guard. DNREC will begin immediately the partial dismantling of the Cape Henlopen pier because of imminent threats, both onshore and off, as storm season nears. “As larger and larger pieces break off, they could present significant hazards to navigation, and potentially to seaside facilities like DRBA's Ferry Terminal,” Sec. O’Mara said, noting that creosote-treated timbers breaking away from the pier could pose environmental concerns. “For these reasons, our experts believe that it is absolutely critical to remove the structure before the fall storm season arrives.” It was bound to happen. Someone killed one of those tiger musky. My fish was bigger anyway.8/8/2012 Listen, I understand that the fish is not native. I understand that it is sterile. I just wish people didn’t have to kill magnificent creatures like this to make them feel like big men. I also wish that the News Journal would not glorify killing. Really I guess I am just selfish since I do not want more anglers targeting tiger musky and I want more alive fish like this out there so that I can catch and release them. SO here it is, Hey News Journal thanks for promoting irresponsible behavior and to James R. Stewart of Newark, get a clue. If you enjoy catching these fish don’t kill them. And best of all don't promote where you caught it. If you need a lesson in responsible angling and ethics message me. I will give you an earful.

Loomis Pro Tim O'neill and I went out Shad fishing at an undisclosed location. He was dialing a ndew G. Loois Roaring RIver GLX 11ft 7wt switch rod. He was rigged with a 425 gr Rio Skagit Flight. I used my 12 ft 6 in 400 gr 5/6 G. Loomis Versispey rigged with 350 Rio Scandi. He used an itermidiate Versileadrer and I used a medium sinking Versileader. We caught a bunch of fish that morning and also eneded up taking some cool photos. There is something fun about watching the city wake up with the river roaring around us. I learned from steelheading that fish will often hold in the secondary areas adjacent to the deeper more traditonal holding spots. Whether it is people activity or birds the fish will move to the least disturbed areas. In this case I believe that the tree cover and lack of good ambush rocks protected these fish from osprey and heron despite the lack of depth. We caught a bunch of hickories after moving around and finding a slug of fish that we hard to get to. Over the next series of days I came back and hit the fish. Below you can see the S. flies we used to catch the Hickories. Our secret color combo is not shown below. American Shad The Americans like a little bit larger fly. I tied these earlier in the year When you are fishing in the hood you find scary stuff. Be safe out there kids!
Well, Terry knocked it out of the park again! Building upon the success of the winter open house Terry, Tim and Mary Ann put on other open house at A Marblehead Flyfisher. The event was well attaned and Mary Ann kept the food coming. I am always happy to see Mary Ann but I am even happier when I know Mary Ann will have food. This time Terry invited Loomis rep Dick Kondak to come. I really enjoyed meeting Dick. You know our industry just has the nicest people. He brought many rods for everyone to try out. I cast several rods including a pro 4x pft 4 and 5 wt, NRX 9ft 5 and 6 wt and the full line up of Roaring River GLX Switch Rods. The highlights for me were the 5 wt NRX. I was able to cast the entire line plus a TON of backing. It threw super tight loops. I was really impresses on my loop compactness and integrity even while casting into the wind. I also spent a bunch of time with the 5 and 8 wt Roaring River GLX Switch Rods. The lightness in hand of the 8 was shocking. Both rods had one of those all in one switch lines. I think I would have liked a lighter line on the 5. It seemed too soft to me. After my experience with the Rio Scandi this weekend I would love to try some of those out on the 5. Check out the two handed wizard below! I was happy that my wife, baby and father in law could come out. Ryan Brown even drove up from DC to get new waders and boots. I have included a video below of him casting one of the switch rods. I think he did a bang up job for his first time with a two hander. If you have not made it out to one of these events you are really missing out on seeing some great gear and hanging out with super cool people. What did I miss guys? Please comment below.
G.Loomis Sales rep Dick Kondak will be there with all the new Loomis rods to cast. It should be a good time. The last open house was a blast. Rick will even be there!
